Planning and evaluation of the article

Wade Waters:

The double page spread is split completely, with two columns.

On the left page it is the picture of the two in the group. They are both looking at the camera and although it is quite close up, it isn't just there faces.

On the right page it is an article about this group. It includes a drop capital in crazy font to entice the reader. The first paragraph is about them, their goal and their views. The second is about their professions, they aren't full time artists, even though they want to bring out an album. Final two paragraphs they talk about their genre and the disappointment of not making an actual album.

I'd say the article is fairly informal, as for most in Source magazine based on the genre and target audience.

A shining wit:

The double page spread is split into four columns, 3 for writing and one picture.

On the left page it has two blocks of writing within the 2 columns. The first block is a review of the background of which this 'MC' is going to be talking about and then follows onto the interview. The interview carries on throughout the next 2 columns.

On the right page it has that one remaining column of writing and then a portrait photo of 'Leeds' best MC'.

The whole article is definitely informal because even in the first line, swear words are used...'bullshit'. Then, not being stereotypical but the interview is with a MC. Plus, again it appears in 'The Source' magazine.
Here is the first double page spread that I made and changed. Originally, I had the topics more spread out with 'Black Pepper' the band, column two after the title and then 'Upcoming Gigs' and 'Tour' in the next column with the final column being the START of the 'Exclusive Interview'. Then I moved 'Upcoming Gigs' and 'Tour' in to the same column as 'Black Pepper' which enabled me to add to the Exclusive Interview.
It also made all the font size the same, as it wasn't. Looks a lot neater.

Evaluation of the Finished Magazine

I'd like to start by stating everything I have changed from my flat plans.

The Front cover is only slightly different, added a strip at the top of the page and moved some of boxes around.

The contents page has changed considerably because for my flat plan I put 'CONTENTS' in a pattern going down on the top right corner. I felt that it didn't work well with the layout, it made the pictures of the groups squashed and too thin and wasn't the right technique for my target audience.

Finally, my double page spread hasn't changed much at all, I have kept it the same as my flat plan.

Existing Analysed Magazines:

Front cover - My front cover is fairly similar to one of the existing magazine's, VIBE. Both have got a main picture showing main topic of the magazine for that issue and has the other topics going down each side of the picture. I have chosen and big, bold font and in capitals for the title of my magazine and both have a strip of news above the title. The other front cover is different to mine, same genre and target audience but my front cover is less formal and not as imposing as mine is not a close up picture. Again the title is still big, bold and in capitals.

Contents page - My contents page is completely different to the existing one, however, I think that my one is more to do with my target audience. The existing one, has one main display picture and then a small section showing the featured. I like the way that they have set out 'CONTENTS' but it didn't fit with my layout. Both contents pages, mine and existing aren't particularly vibrant. They have only used three colours, grey, white and black. I have used a blue for the title and then black and white for the writing and backgrounds, however the pictures, even though they are quite dark too, brings colour to it.
Double page spread - The layout for the existing and my double page spread are similar in the fact that they are split horizontally for pictures and writing (although mine has been split in half, theirs hasn't). However, the existing magazine has got 6 columns, to my 4. I have decided to put my title as one of the columns and they have theirs along the top of two columns. There text is an article about one person over all 4 columns of writing (2 out of 6 being another picture). Where as, mine has 3 columns of writing and not all on one thing... I have various different topics and then 2 columns full of an interview with the group.

Overall, I have tried to keep my magazine as similar as possible to the existing ones, without copying.
Look at the similarities in our two fonts for the mastheads:

They are both bold and use caps ... It doesn't matter that they are the both same colour because all issues have different colours. 'SOUL SCENE' looks thinner because there are more characters.
Both mine and the existing front cover has one main photo... however I have also added others to it.

My magazine is for the urban industry (hip-hop, soul etc). Therefore my pictures are very suited for this genre, the age, race and gender support this. All of the people in the my pictures are in their late teens, which will involved these as my target audience. The fact that a lot of the people in the my pictures are black shows where the majority of the urban groups come from, and therefore people that are from urban areas will most likely be interested too. And as for gender... there are male and females in the pictures so it neglects neither.
The written parts, will also target the above but because this type of magazine targets 18-34 year olds, the writing will be colloquial but written with no spelling errors. I would say that the higher end the age range will be more interested with reading about the new groups rather than the youths, especially the interview.

I would see this magazine being sold in supermarkets, newsagents, garages and any music shops. It may appear in specialist record shops however, I'd expect to see it in supermarkets and that too because the hip-hop genre is growing and I can see it being popular so the more places that sell it, the more chance it has to keep going. But not only that, a lot popular and all genre magazines are sold in these sort of places.

As I said in blog 2 (link below) my target audience is 18-34 both sexes.

This will appeal to the higher end of the age range because they will probably be more interested in the background of the group and then decide to listen to them where as the younger generation will like the look of them and test them out straight away. However if the youths did feel they wanted to read this then the language is quite colloquial so they wouldn't have any problems. The idea of an interview is for the groups point of view and it is effective for all ages.

This picture would very much appeal more to the younger end of the age range, although the elder would still look... Youths are more interested with the look of the band and their genre/music. This would be the same for any other magazine... as their front covers are similar.

For the final two questions...

Before doing Media Studies, I had never used Adobe InDesign or Photoshop so I didn't really know what to expect.

The Publications that I used in this project helped to enable all of the ideas that I wanted to come into reality, for example on the double page spread the style of writing and the layout was achieved due to Adobe In Design, and without that system I may not have been able to get the results that I did. Also the styling to the pictures is very important to have the computer software because otherwise I would have found it hard to crop and do what I wanted to do with the pictures. I feel that even though I hadn’t used these publications before, I learnt quickly and I would be willing to use it again because of how easy and efficient it is to use.
Since the preliminary task I think that I have improved dramatically, the reason for this being that I had analysed other magazine beforehand and therefore had an idea of what front covers and contents pages generally look like. I could also link this to the topic on hand, music which of course we didn’t have the chance to do with the preliminary task. I also think the way the design phase went in my planning went a lot better and I had a lot more ideas. I also tried to make sure that I did everything in the order that I was supposed to so that I had the right knowledge the next stage each time and I didn’t want to get behind because I feel as though I rushed the preliminary task.
Plus after using the publications, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop in the preliminary task, it gave me a practice on them before the real magazine. Knowing more about these publications would have given me a bigger scope as to what they can do and then they could be put to use. Also comparing the language I used, it is a lot more appropriate and sophisticated (where needed to be) to the target audience. Another way I think I improved was in the Styling of the magazine as it flows more with the theme's of the magazine and the same style runs through the whole magazine.

Flat Plans- Double Page Spread

The existing magazine's double page spread has three columns on each page, where as mine only has two on each page. I have also split my page in half horizontally, so the four pictures are above the half way mark and the writing is below.

I have put my title in one column, and this will be in Harabara, bold and in capitals.

My double page spread includes four photos, of the same group posing in different ways. They are there to try and get noticed and get people buying.

The four columns of writing:-

First is the title

Second is 'Black Pepper', about them and their new merchandise.

Third is 'Upcoming Gigs' and 'Tour'

Final one is an 'Exclusive Interview' with them.

I have kept the same fonts, Harabara for the title and Nobility Casual for the texts.

The main colour is coming from the photos, however I haven't kept the background behind the title white... it is black with white font. Although, for the texts I have kept the background white, I've made the font blue. Both these techniques are related to the contents page and front cover.

Photos

The first four photos shown here are for my Double Page Spread and one of them is also used in the contents page.

The fifth and sixth is only used on the contents page representing NBA stars and a rapper. The seventh is the main picture on the front cover and it also appears again on the contents page. The eighth is only used on the front cover, to get tickets to their upcoming gig. And Chipmunk, picture nine is a small picture appearing on the front page and contents page, about him at Atlantis.

The first four photos, are pictures of my friends wearing the latest fashion in London of 'Drummer Boy Clothing'. I felt wearing this was very fitting especially as they are wearing the same. I also thought that having a white background was probably for the best, as makes the group look more professional.
The fifth photo are friends also, pretending to be a reviving NBA star and his agent. They are wearing casual, yet quite big fitting clothing, fitting for NBA stars. The setting, is very peculiar, you may say, however the picture was taken just after an interview at their house.

The sixth photo is of an unknown rapper, having just come off stage. The hat is very fitting with his genre of music and so is the nakedness, having been just on stage, girls would have loved it. Setting is him just after a concert and coming into the audience.

The seventh photo are friend of friends of mine, representing a newly formed group. The clothing is very dark, good colours for urban sector, hairstyles are noticeable and they're all posing in a threatening way, effective as urban groups don't look particularly 'nice'. Again, I thought the white background was the best fitted on the professional side, promotion and all.

The eighth photo is again two friend of friends, taken close up and they're representing a duet/remix for the up coming gig. It is a very good picture for advertising. They are very close which is representing, lust for one another which is emphasised so much in this industries songs. I have decided to add a little colour to the background this time as it is a form of advertisement and there isn't as much background to cover and white is kind of a plain colour.

The final photo was taken when Chipmunk came to Atlantis and was just going onto stage, which would explain all the other hands and people in the way. He is a very big hip hop artist which is why he is fitting with my magazine. He is wearing sunglasses, INSIDE, which is very common for urban artists, don't want to show their true identity as such.

Flat Plans- Contents

Contents Page:
My contents page includes plenty of pictures, relevant to what's inside the magazine. I have included five pictures on the contents page alone, which is a lot. With these photos I have managed to include captions about the photos used and tell the readers what else is included and where it is in the magazine.

I have gone with a different styled title. It suits the target audience as Urban industry is a different type of music as apposed to pop and it covers lots of genres, so it is fitting.

I kept to the same fonts, as I said I would for the contents.

The colours are similar to the front cover, however the title of each pages differ.

I have used the same sort of style for the contents page title as the existing analysed magazine. However the rest of page. I have included a lot more pictures and writing. The columns are more or less the same too, however mine are more distinct... the existing magazine contents page has the three columns but a big picture has covered two of them.

Flat Plans- Front cover

I have designed two front covers.
I have decided to choose 'SOUL SCENE' as my magazine front cover.
I feel that the title is more catchy and is as relevant as Street rap in the urban music genre.
I prefer the layout of the title position for 'Soul Scene' and the headlines throughout the page are more clear and neat.
More information given as well.

Soul Scene:
For the text on the front cover and probably all the way through the magazine, I am going to keep it the same font for the text and titles. (Except modify sizes, colours, caps etc.)
For my image, I have got a photo of a 'new formed' group and they will be taken from a distance, won't be standing in a line, will be looking into the camera and stood to suit. The image will cover the whole page.
The text will appear as little side notes throughout the page. 'Soul Scene' will be in capitals and other text will be 'nobility casual' caps also, but smaller.
The colours:
The image of the band members... has a white background and they are wearing fairly dark clothing and very scruffy. This is a mix between other front covers from 'VIBE'.
My front cover is fairly similar in the techniques I've used to the magazine covers that I analysed.
The title and text layouts are prime examples of this. However, I am keeping more consistent than 'VIBE' as I'm sticking to the same fonts throughout.
Therefore, this is fitting with my target audience.
